AWAKEN
Marsh Farm
Info
Set in 1653, AWAKEN is a site-responsive piece which follows Sarah Spindler, a maidservant on the run after being accused of witchcraft in a society where women’s fates are tightly bound by fear, superstition, and control. Fleeing into the woods with her trusted companion, Sarah is forced to confront whether escape is possible — or whether destiny has already claimed her.
Written in the working-class language of Canting, which predates Cockney, AWAKEN gives voice to the long-forgotten stories of women, the working class, and cunning folk healers erased from official histories.
Commissioned by Revoluton Arts, this site-responsive, script-in-hand reading shares a 20-minute section of the play, created in honour of the new amphitheatre and sacred stone circle community-built Luton Henge in Marsh Farm.
Taking place on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2026, the reading invites audiences to gather, listen and bear witness in a space rooted in collective making and ancestral memory.
The event marks a long-standing collaboration between a female-led creative team: writer, actor and producer Cheryl Prince; director and actor Law Ballard; and co-producer and performer Ellie Zeegen. This sharing celebrates the space, amplifies women’s voices and actively invites dialogue with the local community to shape how the play continues to develop.
