The starting point for the ground-breaking national project, Nature Calling, was words. The project commissioned an exceptional, diverse range of artists to explore and celebrate nature and our National Landscapes. And to set that into motion for Luton was Lutonian writer and poet, Lee Nelson.
For his Nature Calling commission, Lee created a short collection of 9 poems titled: ‘Sharpenhoe Begins’. ‘Beginner’s Hill’, ‘Waulud’s Bank, Lygetun Rises’ and ‘The Holy Well Feeds The Mainstream’ are just a few excerpts from Lee’s poetry collection. The work was created after Lee invited local people to two events exploring the landscape and heritage of the Chilterns.
