Info

Theatre in the Mill’s interactive installation BUSSING OUT is coming to Luton this spring.

The powerful exhibition reveals a hidden piece of British history – one that shaped the identity of many global majority children who arrived in Bradford, and many other cities across the UK, during the 1960s and 1970s.

Bussing Out reveals the little-known government policy active between 1965 – 1976 that promoted the ‘dispersal’ of inner-city ‘immigrant’ children out to predominantly white schools in rural areas.

Though framed as promoting integration, this policy left parents without a choice in their children’s schools, and often disrupted children’s education, community ties, wellbeing and left a largely undocumented legacy for the families and children affected.

Written and directed by Artistic Director Dr Shabina Aslam, the installation gathers shared heritage and memories of migration, belonging and education.

The Installation

Bussing Out takes place inside a reimagined school bus, combining audio-visual storytelling with real testimonies and reconstructed memory.

You are invited to spend time in the space with the sequences, create your own connections and narratives, and to embrace the stillness.

The installation is open to the public:

  • Monday 20 April – Friday 24 April: 10:00 – 16:00 daily
  • Saturday 25 April: 11:00 – 16:00
